Discovering the Hidden Live(r)s of Venice
DOCUMENTARY
Following two months of intensive research-based script development focusing on the hidden dimensions and unique professions of Venice, students from three international universities convened in the city to produce a series of six short documentaries. The project captured distinctive local personalities and trades, offering a fresh perspective on Venetian culture.
In this segment, my team of five student researchers and filmmakers explores the intricate, centuries-old tradition of gondola construction (squeri). Over the course of a two-week field residency in Venice, our primary focus was documenting the master craftsmanship of Roberto, a renowned local artisan. Through immersive observation and on-site filming, this section captures the meticulous process behind building and maintaining these iconic Venetian vessels, highlighting the dedication required to preserve this vital aspect of the city's maritime heritage.
